The German-manufactured Leopard series of main battle tanks has been a mainstay of NATO's armored forces since its inception, and the Leopard 2 variant has been in Canadian service for well over a decade. With a 120mm main gun, a coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun, and another machine gun mounted on the loader's hatch, the Leopard brings impressive firepower to the battlfield.
Canadian tankers are well-used to using the Leopard in both training and operations, although the Canadian variant of the Leopard possesses a few modifications compared to the original German model, designated as the 2A6 CAN. Most Canadian Leopards are equipped with distinctive slat armor intended to ward off the explosions of anti-tank weapons and, increasingly, one-way attack drones.
While the Leopard is slated to be replaced eventually by a consortium of European NATO members, the Leopard is likely to remain a dominant presence on European battlefields far into the future.
